The Association for Humanist Sociology mourns for the victims and survivors of the massacre at the El Paso Walmart. We stand with all those who suffer from violence and injustice, but our hearts go out especially to those of the El Paso and Ciudad Juárez community as the location for our association’s annual conference this autumn. Unlike the perpetrator of this horrific event, we chose to travel to El Paso to celebrate the people of the community, to learn from them, to support them, and to understand their issues and needs from firsthand experience. Our organizational mission is to address the problems of society through the insights and skills of social science. It is to that end that we will meet in El Paso on October 30—November 2. The tragedy of this terrible crime of hate and white supremacy amplifies the reasons our association chose to gather in El Paso.
